YOUR NEXT AMERICAN HERO
Calyn pursued higher education with purpose. He studied at Bemidji State University and Ripon College, where he majored in political science, communications, and environmental studies. At Ripon College, he served as an intern in the sustainability department, was an active member of Theta Chi fraternity, competed as an NCAA Division III cross-country and track athlete, and held leadership roles in student government. He also participated in his college and state chapters of College Democrats, further honing his skills in civic engagement and public policy.
In 2020, Calyn chose to serve the nation by field organizing for the presidential campaign of Joe Biden in Ohio, prioritizing civic duty and grassroots organizing over continued studies. His experience deepened his commitment to democratic participation and community-driven solutions.
In 2022, Calyn ran for town council in Avon, Colorado, embracing public service even in the face of electoral defeat. Undeterred, he became a precinct organizer, county vice chair, and representative for his state house district on the Colorado Democratic Party platform committee. He also served on the state party central committee and led the Economic, Job Creation, and Social Justice Plank while co-leading the Immigration Plank—contributing to meaningful policy discussions and platform development. His advocacy played a significant role in the Amendment J movement in 2024, demonstrating his commitment to principled civic action.
Calyn Dean Rieger was born and raised in Dassel, Minnesota, where he developed a lifelong commitment to community service, agriculture, and environmental stewardship. The son of James Richard Rieger, a proud U.S. Army veteran of over 20 years, and brother to Jose Rieger, who courageously survived two brain tumor removals. Calyn learned early the values of resilience, service, and dedication to others.
At just 14 years old in 2014, Calyn began his political journey advocating for agriculture and natural resources, engaging legislators, and amplifying rural voices. In 2015, he joined the conservation corps of Minnesota and dedicated six years to AmeriCorps service—three years in environmental clean-up and trail maintenance, and three additional years working with state legislators to expand conservation funding, projects, and public awareness. His work helped create opportunities that strengthened Minnesota’s natural heritage and communities.
Currently, Calyn serves as Colorado’s National Committee Representative for the Young Democrats of America, a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, and a member of the Colorado Democratic Party central committee. He also leads the Rural Plank for the Colorado Democratic Party platform, participates in the party’s resolution and outreach committees, and continues to champion policies that uplift rural communities, economic opportunity, and democratic participation.
Calyn Dean Rieger’s support network believes leadership is about service, compassion, and building stronger communities. His passion for public service and civic engagement reflects the belief that America thrives when individuals dedicate themselves to positive change. We need more leaders who love their communities and work to bridge divides—leaders who embody the spirit of American opportunity and responsibility.
Fun fact: Calyn rescued a golden retriever named Aiden, who remains a cherished part of his life and a reminder of the power of compassion and second chances.
